Paramedic School
To become a paramedic it is necessary that you attend a paramedic school. The program duration is almost two years and consists of in classroom training as well as clinical and ride-time training. Although paramedic training is becoming more standardized throughout the country, it still varies from state to state.
People usually get confused between EMT and paramedic health professionals. EMT stands for Emergency Medical Technician and these professionals have got to attend school for three months and cannot give medication, perform invasive procedures or monitor cardiac rhythms. Paramedic training has a duration of two years, and they can do all the procedures the EMTs cannot. However, almost every paramedic school requires you to be an EMT before being able to enroll in paramedic training.
National curriculum is becoming adopted by all states, and it says that the paramedic training should last up to two years opposite to the one year required by some states. It is expected that all states will adopt the national curriculum to ensure that schools follow it and students receive education from an accredited paramedic school.
As most of the health care programs, paramedic training includes classroom and practical experience training. However, opposite to other programs, and as you can imagine, ride-time training is also necessary.
In the classroom, you will learn about cardiac function, pulmonary function, anatomy, medications, and all the aspects related to the human body. The emergency room is often used for the clinical practice. Furthermore, students have to attend clinical rotations in nursing homes, local hospitals, and other health care facilities. When ride-time training arrives, students must ride along with the fire department paramedics or ambulance service. On this part of the practice, they will be supervised by a skilled paramedic preceptor.
After classroom, practical and ride-time is finished, the paramedic can start working in the area. However, continuing education courses and certifications are needed to keep their paramedic license.
One of the duties of a paramedic is to provide advanced life support well known as ALS to patients that need it. The paramedic stabilizes the patient and provides basic medical services like CPR and intravenous solutions. They can also administer medications under physician’s orders and provide oxygen on the way to the emergency room.
They are also responsible for treating wounds and other injuries on the site, as well as checking patient’s vital signs. They will be the ones that should maintain the respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous system working as well as possible.
Paramedics need to be prepared to assist childbirths, check symptoms for epilepsy, and other illnesses. For cardiac cases, they must know how to use a defibrillator, read electrocardiograms, and administer proper quantities of heart medication.
While attending a paramedic school, a future paramedic will be able to get to know the human body in a very detailed way. They are the ones that, firstly, reach the injured or sick patient. Therefore, they have to be well prepared to deal with an emergency and take action in a short period of time.
