Surgical Technologist Schools
Surgical technologist schools train students to become surgical technicians. Although they are highly skilled, and they have high salaries, they usually are not very notorious health professionals. Surgical technician kind of do their work backstage in the operating room.
Getting a Certification
It is very easy to apply to surgical technologist schools. Usually a high school diploma or a GED is all that is needed to enroll in this type of school. Course training duration varies from nine to twenty four months and is offered in community college, junior college, vocational school, hospital, or university. Programs should be accredited by to the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Course curriculum includes physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, medical ethics, and medical terminology. Other things that can be learned are disease prevention, techniques to sterilizing surgical equipment and instruments, microbiology and surgical procedures. Program curriculum also includes practical experience as part of the education.
After training completion, technicians should also get certified since most public and private hospitals require certified technicians prior to hiring. Certification is the proof that they acquired the proper education and have the appropriated skills to perform the job in a professional way.
When surgical technicians are certificated, they have better chances to get good job opportunities in such a competitive marketplace as well as higher salaries.
Job Description
Surgical technicians have several duties while doing their job before, during, and after surgeries. Here are some of the duties they have to carry out:
- Sterilize of surgical instruments
- Sterilize of the operating room
- Create a sterile environment
- Monitor patient’s vital signs
- Wash and shave the area on the patient for the surgery
- Suture the wound site
- Assist surgeons and assistants while they place their gowns and gloves
- Hand instruments to the surgeon during the surgery
- Place sanitary drapes around the operating area
- Recount instruments after the surgery is complete
- Clean the operation room and sterilize it again for the next surgery
There are some further duties that are performed depending on the specialty chosen by the technician. There are different areas to choose from such as neurosurgery, open heart surgery, and surgical first assistant or even circulating technologist. All these specialized technicians will have slightly different tasks from those performing general surgical service.
