Ultrasound Technician Schools
Ultrasound technician schools provide students with the proper education so that they can become highly qualified professionals in their area. Ultrasound technicians are educated to use diagnostic imaging equipment most commonly known as ultrasound equipment.
Education
Ultrasound technicians should have an associate’s degree within their field. They are all advised to seek for a bachelor’s degree in medical sonography in order to improve their changes to get better jobs. Certification can also be pursued. It usually takes two years or less but prerequisites like medical terminology, biology, and physics are required. Some community programs even give the students the opportunity to attend certification and a degree at the same time. The registered diagnostic medical sonographer can be obtained through a certification examination program provided by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
Job Description
The ultrasound technician usually works in a dark room, with specialized ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) equipment. The exams are usually done without any supervision. They have to perform several tasks prior to the procedure such as:
- Tell the patient what is about to happen
- Put the patient in the right position
- Apply a special gel into the area where the ultrasound is going to act
- Position the equipment correctly and with the rights settings
Using the equipment, the technician will then take several pictures and take some screen measures that will be recorded on disk or film. Ultrasound technicians share their personal opinion with the physician during the diagnosis process. They can also advance a preliminary report.
Depending on the specialty, ultrasound technician schools train ultrasound technicians to exam different parts of the body. We can find:

Workplace
Ultrasound technician schools prepare the students to work in any environment. They can work in public and private hospitals, physicians’ offices and clinics, diagnostic and medical laboratories, diagnostic imaging centers, and even in mobile imaging units. Sometimes there is the need to make an ultrasound in a facility where the ultrasound equipment is not available. Then both technician and equipment are transported to the facilities to perform the exam to the patient who needs it.
This type of technician might need to work weekends and extra hours besides their regular forty-hour schedule, when there are emergencies. Although they do not belong to a higher demanding health care area, it is expected a huge growth in the next decade due to how useful ultrasound is as a way of prevention and early diseases detection. Ultrasound equipments provide both the technician and the patience with an excellent mean of diagnosis.
